Philosophy Circle

A space for open, thoughtful conversation in community.

Next South-West Sydney Philosophy Circle
Wednesday 1st October | 5:30pm - 7:00pm
The Campbell Hotel, 101 Railway St. Campbelltown NSW

Philosophy Circle is a non-commercial community initiative inspired by the café philosophique (or café-philo) movement, which is a grassroots forum for philosophical discussion, founded by philosopher Marc Sautet in Paris, France, in December 1992.

The idea is simple but powerful: people coming together to explore life’s big and small questions in a spirit of openness, reflection, and curiosity.

I started this Philosophy Circle in South West Sydney because this is where I currently live. While our area is vibrant, diverse, and growing, opportunities for slow, reflective conversation are not always easy to find.

I wanted to create a space where neighbours and new friends alike could step away from everyday busyness, sit together, and engage in meaningful dialogue.

Each circle lasts for about 60–90 minutes. At the beginning, we’ll select a philosophical topic or question at random. From there, the conversation unfolds organically.

As the facilitator, I help guide the flow, but the richness of the circle comes from everyone who attends: listening, questioning, and sharing perspectives.

You don’t need to know anything about philosophy to take part. If you enjoy asking “why,” or simply want to listen to thoughtful conversation, this is a place for you.

FAQs

Do I need to know much about philosophy?

Not at all. Curiosity is the only requirement.

Can I just listen?

Yes. You’ll be encouraged but not pressured to contribute.

Is this about religion or spirituality?

No. All people are welcome, regardless of background or belief.

Is it commercial?

No. Nothing is sold or pitched. This is 100% a free community initiative, run voluntarily with the sole purpose of connecting with others in the local community that enjoy philosophical discussion.

Do I need to prepare or bring anything?

No preparation is needed. Just bring yourself, an open mind, and maybe a notebook if you’d like to jot down ideas. Again, this is a free initiative, but if the circle is held at a cafe or restaurant you'll be requested to purchase a small drink or item as a courtesy to the hosting venue.

How often do Philosophy Circles happen?

Typically once a month. When you sign up, you’ll receive updates about upcoming dates and locations.

Where are the circles held?

We meet in local cafés, community spaces, or restaurants. The exact location is confirmed once you register and might vary on a month to month basis.

In the case of the South West Sydney Philosophy Circle, the circles will be held anywhere across the Macarthur and Liverpool regions, but most likely around Campbelltown, Camden or Liverpool.

If you would like to suggest a venue, please let me know.

Do I have to live or work in the circle's area to join?

No, you're most welcome to join regardless of where you're coming from.

How big is the group?

Usually between 6 and 10 people. This size keeps the conversation lively but still intimate.

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely, but please ensure all attendees register so the venue/space and facilitator are prepared.

What if I don't know anyone there?

That’s completely fine. The circle is designed to be welcoming, and one of the main purposes is to hopefully make some new friends.

Can I run a Philosophy Circle somewhere else?

Sure, knock yourself out. If I can help in some way, let me know.

Principles of the Philosophy Circle

Conversational Equality
Everyone’s voice matters equally. No one is the “expert” in the room, we are co-explorers of ideas.

Not Therapy or Counselling
While philosophical discussions may touch on psychology, wellbeing, or personal experience, this is not a substitute for professional therapy or counselling. The circle is about ideas, not treatment.

Respectful Listening
Give others the space to speak without interruption. Listening deeply is as important as contributing.

Open Curiosity
Approach each question and each person’s contribution with a spirit of curiosity rather than judgment.

No Need for Expertise
You don’t need to know “the right answer” or have studied philosophy. Wondering, questioning, and sharing your perspective is enough.

Confidentiality
Respect the privacy of others. What is shared in the circle stays in the circle.

Stay with the Question
The aim is not to reach a final conclusion or “win” an argument, but to explore the question(s) together.

Non-Commercial, Non-Religious
The circle is not a place to sell products, promote services, or recruit to religious or political groups.

Generosity of Spirit
Assume good intentions, even if you disagree. Disagreement is welcome, but it should be expressed with care.

Time Awareness
Keep contributions thoughtful but concise, so everyone has the chance to participate within the time we have.
